From NAPSA’s Research-to-Practice Interest Group: This presentation will discuss, in broad strokes, findings from Wave I of the NEMS, which centered on answering the questions “how often” and “with what risk factors;” as well as findings from Wave II eight years later, which focused on the questions “what are the consequences” and “for whom.” Specifically, the prevalence of different types of elder mistreatment and risk factors for each type will be discussed in the context of outcomes of abuse and protective factors. This discussion should illustrate some steps communities and community based workers can take to both prevent elder abuse, and if elder abuse occurs, prevent or at least limit its negative consequences.
