BIO

Cortney Franklin, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Sam Houston State University (SHSU). She has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on topics ranging from sexual assault on college campuses, intimate partner violence, victim-centered resources, help-seeking behavior, perceptions of sex trafficking victims, school violence, bystander intervention, police responses to crime victims, stalking, trauma presentation, and gender and justice system issues. Her recent work has appeared in Crime & Delinquency, Criminal Justice and Behavior, Psychology of Women Quarterly, Violence Against Women, Feminist Criminology, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Journal of School Violence and Journal of Sexual Aggression. She was formerly the Executive Director of the Crime Victim's Institute at Sam Houston State University. She has published and disseminated action-oriented research to a broad range of victim service providers, law enforcement agencies, criminal justice practitioners, legislators, and other community stakeholders. Dr. Franklin is an active member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) and the American Society of Criminology. She served as an Executive Counselor for the Victimology Section of ACJS, was awarded the Inaugural New Scholar Award in Victimology for the Victimology Section of ACJS in 2012-2013, and was the recipient of the Graduate Mentoring Award honored by The Graduate School at SHSU for 2015-2016. Presently, Dr. Franklin is the Principal Investigator on a Office on Violence Against Women federal award for $393,000 to evaluate the impact of a mandatory sexual and family violence training on a large metropolitan police department’s response to sexual and family violence victims. She is also Co-Principal Investigator on an National Institute of Justice grant related to intimate partner violence and non-fatal strangulation. She currently sits on the Executive Board of the Texas Victim Services Association and is an Editorial Board member for Feminist Criminology, Journal of School Violence, and Psychology of Violence.
