BIO

Venessa Garcia is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at New Jersey City University. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from the SUNY University at Buffalo. Dr. Garcia’s research focuses on oppressed groups but mainly on women as victims, criminals, and officials. Venessa Garcia has conducted evaluation research on police and court response to domestic violence. Her research examines the implementation process and effectiveness of intimate partner violence policies. Venessa Garcia has conducted needs assessment in juvenile justice and resilience research involving children of incarcerated parents. She also conducts research in crime and media. Her victim research focuses on images of female victims of violence. She has published research articles in these areas including in the Deviant Behavior, Children and Youth Services Review, Journal of Criminal Justice, Police Practice and Research: An International Journal, and Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice. Her published books include: Gendered Justice: Intimate Partner Violence and The Criminal Justice System (with Patrick McManimon); Domestic Violence and Child Custody Disputes: A Resource Handbook For Judges and Court Managers (with S.L. Keilitz et al.); Female Victims of Crime: Reality Reconsidered (with Janice Clifford); Women Policing Across the Globe: Shared Challenges and Successes in the Integration of Women Police Worldwide (with Cara Rabe-Hemp); and Crime, Media, and Reality: Examining Mixed Messages about Crime and Justice in Popular Media. She has served as a Deputy Editor/Editorial Board of Feminist Criminology since 2005 and has worked with the Division of Women and Crime of the American Society of Criminology newsletter staff since 2002.
