BIO
Dr. Veronica R. Barrios is an Assistant Professor at Miami University in the department of Family Science and Social Work. Her research focuses on the culture of nondisclosure of sexual violence. Dr. Barrios works with survivors of sexual violence in order to better address how to overcome barriers to disclosure of sexual violence. She uses qualitative methods such as in-depth interviewing and focus groups, as well as community-based participatory action research to conduct her studies. Her participants are often survivors of childhood sexual violence. Dr. Barrios is informed through intersectionality theory and uses this theory to investigate how members of families and broader communities create a culture of silence for survivors of sexual violence. Dr. Barrios' work with survivors is meant to dismantle the culture of nondisclosure of sexual violence.
