BIO

I have been conducting victim orientated research for over 40 years. My first peer reviewed publication in 1973 was on the English Criminal Injuries Compensation Board. For two years I was the criminal justice coordinator for the Department of Anti Rape and Sexual Assault in Erie County, New York, working with local agencies to improve and standardize procedures for handling rape and sexual assault cases. At the University of North Carolina Charlotte I created and taught the curriculum’s first course on crime victims. I have always been active working with agencies and local organizations focusing on victim issues. For the past 30 years my research and publications have focused primarily on intimate partner violence. My research activities have included serving as Principal Investigator of the National Institute of Justice funded Charlotte experiment on the police response to spouse abuse and the NIJ funded project “Explaining the Prevalence, Context, and Consequences of Dual Arrest in Intimate Partner Cases,” and as a Co-Principal Investigator of “Integrating Crime Victims’ Issues into University and College Curricula,” funded by the Office for Victims of Crime. Since I possess a law degree I am comfortable conducting legal as well as empirical research.
